Horizon Flight Instructor-Pilot

HORIZON is the region’s largest independent helicopter flight training academy and is instrumental in training pilots locally and internationally. We offer standard and bespoke rotary-wing training to leading commercial and defence operators. Working in close partnership with our clients, we deliver the training programs you require to build skills in key areas.

Key Responsibilities

• Teach students how to fly helicopters, evaluating their knowledge and skills.
• Comply with the daily program (take-off time, sortie duration).
• Adhere to Horizon standards (content of the sortie, teaching standards, and grading).
• Ensure daily sortie reports are completed, signed, and filed in the student’s personal file.
• Record student flying time in personal files and logbooks accurately.
• Raise necessary occurrence, incident, and accident reports.
• Assist students with logbook entries endorsed by signature.
• Suggest improvements to the training syllabus or program.
• Report non-compliance to the CFI or Safety and Compliance Monitoring Manager.
• Correct student misconduct as necessary.
• Complete extra duties as tasked by the CFI.
• Ensure students fulfill medical requirements for flight.
• Act as course mentor when designated by the CFI.
• Comply with GCAA and all relevant laws and regulations.
• Follow Horizon Operations, Training, and Safety Management Manuals.
• Adhere to Horizon Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Provide training in accordance with the Horizon Aviation Training Manual.
• Complete all necessary forms and logs appropriately.
• Maintain all Horizon resources in a tidy and serviceable condition.
• Encourage essential aviation values such as airmanship and teamwork.
• Ensure all necessary flight plans and general declarations are submitted prior to the flight.

Experience & Education

• Fluent in English (speaking and writing, ELP level 4 minimum).
• Valid class 1 medical with no restrictions (Single Pilot).
• At least 2000 flying hours, with a minimum of 500 instructional hours, and experience conducting ab initio training for at least two courses.
• Holds a valid license (CPL IR/H or ATPL/H).
• Current FI in an ATO (civilian); ex-military background is ideal but not essential; Bell 505 & 429 type rated is a plus.
• Current pilot within the last year.
• Maximum age of 55 years.

Key Skills

• High level of instructional techniques; advanced knowledge in all subjects (CPL and ATPL) and moderate knowledge of regulations (CAR OPS, AIP, CAAP, EASA).
• Computer literate (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
• Strong teamwork, organizing skills, problem-solving abilities, and good communication and interpersonal skills.
