HORIZON is the region’s largest independent helicopter flight training academy and is instrumental in training pilots locally and internationally. We offer standard and bespoke rotary-wing training to leading commercial and defence operators. Working in close partnership with our clients, we deliver the training programs you require to build skills in key areas.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Teach students how to fly helicopters, evaluating their knowledge and skills.
  2. Comply with the daily program (take-off time, sortie duration).
  3. Adhere to Horizon standards (content of the sortie, standard of teaching, grading of sorties).
  4. Complete daily sortie reports, signed by both the Instructor and the student, and file them in the student’s personal file.
  5. Record student flying time in the student’s personal file and logbook.
  6. Raise occurrence, incident, and accident reports as necessary.
  7. Assist students with logbook entries endorsed by signature.
  8. Suggest improvements or corrective actions to the training syllabus or program.
  9. Report non-compliance to the CFI or Safety and Compliance Monitoring Manager.
  10. Correct any misconduct of students.
  11. Complete extra duties as tasked by the CFI.
  12. Ensure students fulfill medical requirements for flight (e.g., wear glasses and carry a spare pair if required).
  13. Act as course mentor when designated by the CFI.
  14. Comply with GCAA and all relevant laws and regulations.
  15. Follow Horizon Operations, Training, and Safety Management Manuals.
  16. Adhere to Horizon Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs).
  17. Ensure training is in accordance with the Horizon Aviation Training Manual.
  18. Complete all necessary forms, including logs, appropriately.
  19. Maintain all Horizon resources (Aircraft, Simulators, Facilities) in tidy and serviceable condition.
  20. Promote essential aviation values such as airmanship, teamwork, and CRM at all times.
  21. Ensure all necessary flight plans and general declarations are submitted prior to the flight.

Experience & Education

  1. Fluent in English speaking and writing (ELP level 4 minimum).
  2. Valid class 1 medical with no restrictions – Single Pilot.
  3. At least 2000 flying hours, with at least 500 hours instructional, and experience conducting ab initio training for at least two courses.
  4. Holds a valid license (CPL IR/H or ATPL/H).
  5. Current FI in an ATO (civilian) preferred; ex-military background ideal but not essential; Bell 505 & 429 type rated is a plus.
  6. Must have been a current pilot within the last year.
  7. Maximum age of 55 years old.

Key Skills

  1. High level of instructional techniques; advanced knowledge in all subjects (CPL and ATPL); moderate knowledge of regulations (CAR OPS, AIP, CAAP, EASA).
  2. Computer literate (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  3. Strong teamwork, organizational skills, problem-solving abilities, and good communication and interpersonal skills; adept at establishing positive relations with students while maintaining self-discipline and student discipline.
