Job SpecificAccountabilities

• Responsible for the direction andcontrol of the ship’s navigation in pilotage waters, narrowwaterways in port approaches, and for the final docking of the shipto harbour facilities
• Engage pilotagetechniques relying on nearby visual reference points and localknowledge of tides, swells, currents, depths and shoals that mightnot be readily identifiable on nautical charts to manoeuvre thevessel through a safe navigable route and clear from marinehazards
• Represent the sovereign jurisdiction ofthe port when the vessel enters the territorial waters to establishthe relationship between the port authorities and thevessel’s owner/master and to ensure the master’scovenant to state laws and port regulations as a condition forentry
• Controls and directs the movements andoperations of the tugs, line boats, mooring teams and handlers tovigilantly dock the ship alongside berths and sea terminals andsecurely moor her to shore and harbourfacilities
• Acts as on-seen-commander for allaction and movements of the ship and the emergency response team inan unfortunate case of accident, fire, or pollution on board -whilethe ship is in port- to restrain damages, that can compromisesafety, and suppress the cause of theemergency
• May act as a loading master tosupervise cargo transfer operations at sea terminals or inemergencies and during adverse weather conditions (Refer torelevant Job Description and accountabilities under LoadingMaster)

MinimumQualification

• Holder of a maritime certificate ofcompetency that is required by the port authority of the relevantport and issued by the pilotage authority
• Class1 certificate of competency- Master mariner or equivalent asapproved by the pilotage authority

Minimum Experience,Knowledge & Skills

• 10 years of experience at sea,including at least 2 years in command of deep draft ships orharbour tugs in the relevant port

ProfessionalCertifications

• Pilotage license for the relevantport issued by the pilotage authority
• Pass awritten exam and a simulator exercise followed by a period oftraining on all vessels types and dockingfacilities
